Empowering young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds.
Our regional team covers Ballarat, Horsham and Nhill, and runs a variety of youth-led social and recreational activities, in-school student support sessions and training programs to empower and connect young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds.
We work closely with local services and volunteers to build their capability in providing inclusive and appropriate programs and services for multicultural youth.

Tiaal Mi Goa
Our Youth Advisory Group have identified mental health as one of the most prominent issues young people in the community are facing today. In particular, those from migrant and refugee backgrounds are finding it difficult to discuss mental health with their parents – and parents have advised us they want to learn more about this too!
A series of recent suicides in the South Sudanese community have prompted young people to say “enough is enough”. Youth Mental Health Ambassadors from CMY Ballarat have partnered up with Headspace Ballarat’s Youth Reference Group to come up with a culturally safe, community based mental health plan. ‘Tiaal Mi Goa’ translates to ‘good mental health’ in the Nuer language of South Sudan, and was agreed upon by the young people running this project.

Social Events
CMY organises culturally safe social events throughout the year, across Ballarat, Horsham and Nhill.
In partnership with the Wimmera Development Association, The ‘Young G’ in Horsham get together once a fortnight to hang out, play basketball and get involved in training sessions. The Patch in Nhill offers a space for young people, particularly from the Karen community, to socialize, get creative, and have movie nights.
