Statement on rise in hate and violence in Victoria
CMY is deeply concerned by the rise in incidents of targeted hate and violence in our Victorian community.
We condemn the recent sickening arson attack on the East Melbourne Synagogue. Our thoughts are with the congregation impacted, as well as the wider Jewish community. Everyone has the right to practice their faith without fear for their safety.
There is absolutely no place for acts of hate, antisemitism, or any form of racism in our multicultural state.
We will continue to stand against and call out these acts, which only incite fear and division with devastating, lasting impacts on multicultural young people and their communities.
Alongside the strengthened anti-vilification and social cohesion laws to be introduced, the Premier today announced a dedicated Anti-Hate Taskforce being established in partnership with Victoria Police, which will meet for the first time this week.
We urge the Government to ensure the diverse voices and experiences of multicultural and multifaith young people are included in any efforts to strengthen social cohesion in Victoria.
We are committed to working collectively with young people, communities and the Victorian Government to better respond to this issue.
