Supporting Multicultural Young People’s Mental Health

Multicultural young people in Australia can experience complex and intersecting challenges that significantly impact their mental health and wellbeing. Factors such as racism, socio-economic disadvantage, immigration instability, experiences of trauma, and structural barriers to accessing care compound the risk of poor mental health outcomes. Overwhelmed health and mental health service systems are inadequately equipped to respond to the specific needs of this diverse group. Several recent policy reviews and frameworks, supported by the strong community expertise of multicultural advocacy organisations, offer a path forward.

This report proposes policy solutions to improve multicultural young people’s access to and experience of mental health care.

It is a collaboration between Orygen and CMY, a follow-up to our earlier report Responding together: Multicultural young people and their mental health.
