Statement on the escalating crisis in Sudan and South Sudan
CMY is deeply troubled by the ongoing conflict and escalation of violence in Sudan and South Sudan. We condemn the atrocities and violations of international human rights taking place and express our deep sorrow for the loss of life, violence, and displacement that is impacting many civilians.
We are all too aware of the challenges facing the region, and our hearts remain with all the communities affected. As the auspice organisation for two Community Support Groups for South Sudanese young people and their families, we work very closely with the community here in Victoria. CMY acknowledges the immense toll this prolonged conflict has on our teams, who provide daily support to the community around local challenges they face while grappling with the ongoing crisis in their homeland.
Kenyatta Dei Wal, Program Manager for the Community Support Groups in Melton and Brimbank, and Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia, said:
“During this incredibly painful time, our thoughts are with all families affected by the escalating crisis in Sudan and South Sudan, including the many South Sudanese community members here in Australia who are carrying heavy emotional burdens as they watch the suffering unfold from afar.
Our teams, particularly our bicultural workers, continue to stand alongside young people and families who are navigating both the challenges of daily life here and the heartbreak of conflict back home.
In times like these, unity, compassion, and collective resolve are vital. Lasting peace is possible only if the international community and all parties involved commit to genuine dialogue and the protection of all affected civilians.”
CMY urges all those in positions of power to continue to demand an immediate ceasefire, an end to the senseless violence, and unimpeded passage for civilians to access humanitarian aid. International humanitarian laws must be upheld, and the focus must be on engaging all parties in productive and peaceful dialogue, to work towards a peaceful resolution and an end to the suffering.
