Statement in response to Bondi Beach shooting

The Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) is devastated by the horrific and senseless shooting at Bondi Beach yesterday, where Jewish families and communities gathered to celebrate the first night of Chanukah.

Our thoughts and hearts are with the communities impacted in Sydney, as well as the wider Jewish community here in Victoria. We express our sincere condolences to the families of all those who have lost their lives.

Everyone has the right to celebrate and practice their faith without fear for their safety. This horror will have lasting impacts on multicultural young people and their communities.

CMY condemns this act of extreme violence. There is no place for such acts of hate, antisemitism, or any form of racism in Australia. We will continue to stand against any attack on our human rights that is designed to incite fear and division.

We urge the Federal and state Government to increase their efforts against extremism, racism, and in strengthening social cohesion.

In the face of fear and division, CMY will continue to work with multicultural young people and their communities, united in our commitment to shape a more respectful, inclusive Victoria and Australia.
