New COVID-19 Insights paper

The emergence of COVID-19, and our responses to it, have resulted in economic and social disruptions the likes of which our world has rarely seen. Young people are going to be disproportionately impacted by this crisis, especially in the longer term, with those from disadvantaged and marginalised communities likely to be impacted hardest.

In our new COVID-19 Insights paper, CMY shares how the crisis response has been experienced by young people from refugee and migrant communities in Victoria. We highlight key areas where immediate, direct and sustained action is required to ensure all young Victorians have access to the support and advice they need to stay connected, safe and healthy – right now, and as we move into more sustained and medium-term scenarios.

We welcomed yesterday’s announcement from Premier Daniel Andrews of additional funding to ensure multicultural communities get the support they need, including the establishment of a CALD Communities Taskforce to help multicultural and multifaith communities through the pandemic, which will be an important measure. We call on the Government to ensure this taskforce has a strong focus on, and is informed by, young people – and agencies who work with young people – recognising their expertise, respecting them as equal partners, and resourcing the critical work that they undertake.
