A change in leadership and multicultural reforms for Victoria
Yesterday was a huge day for Victoria with both a change in leadership and the introduction of the Multicultural Victoria Amendment Bill 2026.
The Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) would like to extend our congratulations the new Premier of Victoria the Hon. Ben Carroll MP, appointed alongside Deputy Premier the Hon. Gabrielle Williams MP. Having worked with the Premier and Deputy Premier in their previous portfolios, we have seen firsthand their commitment to supporting the needs and priorities of multicultural young people and families. We wish them well in their new roles and look forward to continuing to work constructively with the Victorian Government.
We would also like to acknowledge the enormous contributions former Premier Jacinta Allan MP has made and thank her for her support of CMY during her term. We were fortunate to have her presence at our 35-year anniversary event where she generously shared her support for CMY’s mission and emphasised the importance of diversity and inclusion in building a vibrant society.
In another important milestone, the Multicultural Victoria Amendment Bill 2026 was introduced in parliament yesterday. The Bill sets out to deliver on recommendations made in Victoria’s Multicultural Review, led by George Lekakis AO and the expert advisory group, including CMY CEO Carmel Guerra OAM. We look forward to examining the legislation to ensure it reflects the recommendations of the Review to strengthen Victoria’s approach to multicultural communities with the establishment of the new statutory entity, Multicultural Victoria.
As we approach the State Election in Victoria in November, we’ll be calling on all parties and candidates to commit to our priorities for multicultural young people and the communities and organisations that stand with them. When multicultural young people can reach their full potential and meaningfully contribute, it’s of benefit to all Victorians. It’s how, together, we can own the future.
