Mental health can have negative connotations within communities from Arabic-speaking backgrounds. The Community Leadership Group representatives say that words like depression or anxiety are often perceived as being something that a person who is “crazy” experiences. They also say that differences in generation, life experience, and migration experience have led to stigma and a silence around ill mental health.
To change the mindset and the narrative surrounding mental health, this interactive infographic shows Amal’s journey with two paths. She decided to join the MHLP due to the negative stereotypes in many Arabic-speaking communities when it comes to mental health and seeking help. For her, it was an opportunity to create a resource that enables people in her community to see a different perspective and look for support in times of struggle.
Fatemeh is studying a Bachelor of Criminal Justice at Victoria University. She decided to join the MHLP to help young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds learn more about mental health and break down the stigma surrounding this issue in her community.
