Mental health can have negative connotations within communities from Arabic-speaking backgrounds. The Community Leadership Group representatives say that words like depression or anxiety are often perceived as being something that a person who is “crazy” experiences. They also say that differences in generation, life experience, and migration experience have led to stigma and a silence around ill mental health.
To change the mindset and the narrative surrounding mental health, this interactive infographic shows Amal’s journey with two paths. One showing what happens when you actively look for help, and the other displaying what might happen when you decide not to tell anybody and isolate. Amal is a fictional character based on many experiences observed in the community by the Community Leadership Group representatives.
Meet the Arabic Community Leadership Group
Zeinab is an Academic Mentor at Charles Sturt University and likes the kind of leadership that creates supportive environments and encourages others to continually do better. Besides practising extreme sports like skydiving, bungee jumping and more, she is passionate about social justice and helping people to become the best version of themselves through growth and development. To take care of her mental health, Zeinab prays as part of her faith and practices yoga, which helps her to meditate.
She decided to join the MHLP due to the negative stereotypes in many Arabic-speaking communities when it comes to mental health and seeking help. For her, it was an opportunity to create a resource that enables people in her community to see a different perspective and look for support in times of struggle.
Fatemeh is studying a Bachelor of Criminal Justice at Victoria University. She decided to join the MHLP to help young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds learn more about mental health and break down the stigma surrounding this issue in her community. Her main learning from the project was that time management and setting achievable goals for your day-to-day tasks can have a positive impact on your mental wellbeing.
