Statement on racist demonstration at Northland Shopping Centre

CMY is appalled by the disturbing racist demonstration that took place at Northland Shopping Centre in Preston recently. We strongly condemn the actions of a group of cowardly, faceless individuals who spread hateful white supremacist slogans. This was an attack on all of us – and on the fabric of our richly diverse, multicultural society.

There is no denying that racism is still a significant social issue in this country. Multicultural young people are particularly vulnerable to the negative and harmful impacts of racism. It affects their lives and communities daily, and can have devastating consequences for their futures. We must do better, for the futures of our young people.

We call on all Victorians to stand against all forms of racism and discrimination. Each and every one of us has a role to play in shaping culture, and creating a more inclusive society. We must work together to ensure all Victorians can safely participate in daily life without fear of hate and vilification.

If you have experienced racism in Victoria, you can report it confidentially to the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission through the Community Reporting Tool.
