What is Ucan2?
Ucan2 is an innovative program that aims to increase the social, education, training, and employment opportunities for young people from refugee backgrounds during their first fifteen months of resettlement in Australia. The Ucan2 project recognises the need to provide additional support for young people (16 – 24 years) who are newly arrived to Australia from refugee backgrounds, as they make their transitions through the post compulsory school, training and tertiary sector, and aims to contribute to their recovery and integration.

Objectives
- To increase the level of co-operation between providers of education, social support, training and employment services working with young people from refugee backgrounds in the 16 – 24 year age group.
- To increase education, training and employment opportunities for young refugees in the first 15 months of the resettlement, recovery and integration process.
- To increase psycho-social support provided to newly arrived young people through developing relationships with volunteers and class curriculum.

Program Details
The program is currently delivered at Adult Multicultural Education Service (AMES) in the West (Footscray) and South-East (Dandenong & Noble Park) of Melbourne, at at Noble Park English Language School, and at the Croydon campus of Swinburne University. The program employs volunteers who attend the Ucan2 program for 2 hours a week for 16 weeks to support the young people with their learning needs. The volunteer aspect of the Ucan2 program aims to strengthen the support base and social context of newly arrived young people, and allows the project delivery to occur in a supportive environment.
Volunteers are encouraged to share their knowledge, experience and skills with newly arrived young people and help them develop the skills required to transition from the english language centre into mainstream society, and to balance commitments of work, study, family, friends and community. This often involves assisting the young people with writing a resume, computer work and excursions to different workplaces. Volunteers are provided with formal training, supervision and support from CMY, and will be required to commit to volunteering on one afternoon per week for a six month period (a school semester). The volunteer model does not match individual mentors and mentees but encourages communication and relationship building in a group environment within the ‘classroom time’ of the project.
