St Monica’s College is located in the North of Melbourne, with 1,917 students enrolled over two campuses. Of these students, approximately 83 are EAL students and 32 come from a refugee background. Students with language backgrounds other than English make up 62% of the student cohort, with Sudanese, Iraqi, Egyptian and Lebanese being the predominant cultural backgrounds.
The school identified that students from refugee backgrounds would most benefit from a project focused on family engagement. The key identified needs of families from refugee backgrounds were: increasing capacity to support their child’s learning at home, and increasing their understanding of the Australian education system, including post-secondary pathways.
