Ballarat community recognises CMY youth projects

October 19, 2015

The Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) is proud to have been nominated for the 2015 City of Ballarat Youth Awards for two of its outstanding initiatives.

The Awards celebrate the achievements of Ballarat’s young people and both the CMY Grampians Youth Leadership ‘Unconference’ and the ongoing CMY ‘Happy Place’ sessions have been announced as finalists in the Community Youth Group & Project Award category.

The Unconference, held in September 2014,  brought together newly arrived young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds and interested others from across the region.

Shiree Pilkinton, CMY Multicultural Youth Worker said the participants joined representatives from relevant cultural, civic and community organisations for the event which was driven largely by young people.

Unconference included a range of dynamic and inspiring presenters, workshops and networking opportunities and participants helped generate ideas for future youth-led projects,” she said.

“One of these projects was CMY’s popular Happy Place sessions, which are also nominated for an award this year,” Ms Pilkinton said.

Happy Place sessions are held monthly, fostering strong friendships among participants through the sharing of time, food and music.

“Happy Place was launched in May this year, after young people at the Unconference expressed a need for their own space,” she said.

"The sessions promote cultural diversity and social cohesion by providing young people from all cultural backgrounds a space to meet new people, mingle and share experiences."

“CMY is thrilled to be nominated for these awards, particularly for two of our youth-led projects.”

“The young people in Ballarat have worked hard to make these projects so successful and that enthusiasm and drive is certainly worthy of recognition.”

Ballarat Youth Award winners will be announced at a special ceremony this Friday 23 October at the city’s Regent Theatre. Over 100 nominees and their families are invited to celebrate the wonderful efforts of Ballarat's young people at this event.
