The Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) in partnership with The Wheeler Centre, and The Multicultural Centre for Women's Health (MCWH), is proud to present this three-day workshops series led by Dr Robin DiAngelo, the world-renowned anti-racism educator from the University Of Washington School Of Education.
These events present CMY and its partners with a shared platform to work together to challenge and eliminate racism, building on the existing anti-racism work that is occurring, and spark continued collective action against racism in Victoria.

Why is it so hard to talk about racism in our workplace?

This whole day workshop will explore Dr Di Angelo’s work around white fragility and reflect on the opportunities to address and eliminate racism in our organisations and institutions. This workshop is designed for representatives from government and non-government organisations, institutions and community members.
Dr Robin Di Angelo on White Fragility:
“White people in Settler Colonial contexts live in a racially insular social environment that builds our expectations for racial comfort while at the same time lowering our stamina for enduring racial stress. I term this lack of racial stamina 'White Fragility.'”
"White Fragility is a state in which even a minimal challenge to the white position becomes intolerable, triggering a range of defensive moves including argumentation, invalidation, silence, withdrawal, and claims of being attacked and misunderstood."
"These moves function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and maintain white control. This workshop will provide an overview of the socialization that inculcates white fragility and the perspectives and skills needed for white people to build their racial stamina and engage more constructively across race.”
CMY & MCWH Facilitators will facilitate reflective exploratory sessions on Robin Di Angelo’s presentation on White Fragility where participants can:
• Connect more deeply with other organisations and individuals that are passionate about anti-racism approaches and strategies
• Reflect on their current approaches and existing anti-racism work that is occurring across their organisation in light of Dr Di Angelo’s session
• Build transformative actions for talking about, challenging, and eliminating racism that links to organisational strategies for addressing racism and/or
• Consider how to develop innovative transformative multi-platform / organisational social media campaigns for talking about, challenging, and eliminating racism that reinforce organisational strategies.
Across the three workshops, we will develop a collaborative resource for how we have conversations and take actions that minimize resistance and backlash when we challenge and call out racism.
Dr. Robin DiAngelo is Affiliate Faculty of Education at the University of Washington. She is a two-time winner of the Student's Choice Award for Educator of the Year from the University of Washington’s School of Social Work. Her scholarship is in White Racial Identity and Race Relations.
In addition to her academic work, Robin has extensive experience as a workplace consultant in race relations and racial justice. Robin has numerous publications and books, including What Does it Mean To Be White? Developing White Racial Literacy. Her work on White Fragility has influenced the national dialogue on race and been featured or cited in Salon, NPR, PBS, The New York Times, and The New Yorker. Her book White Fragility: Why It's So Hard For White People To Talk About Racism was released in June and debuted on the New York Times Bestseller list.
