Volunteering with Pathways to Opportunity

Volunteer with Pathways

Pathways programs are in need of volunteer mentors from all walks of life to support young people engaged in the program. Young people will be actively seeking or participating in employment and education options. Mentors will support and empower young people towards gaining employment, pursuing their career and developing improved understandings of Australian workplace culture and the employment system.

Volunteer mentors are matched with individual young people and provide support over a 12 month period in group and 1:1 settings.

CMY provides ongoing training and support to mentors involved in the Pathways programs.

What are the time commitments?

Volunteer mentors initially attend a series of five 2 hour weekly workshops. The workshops assist young people to enhance skills in writing job applications and resumes, searching for roles and participating in job interviews.

Mentors are then matched with individual young people and provide support for a young person over a 12 month period. This involves regular phone and face-to-face contact with a young person and attendance at monthly group mentoring sessions, facilitated by CMY staff.

What do volunteer mentors do?

Mentors are encouraged to share their work, study and life experiences in Australia, act as role models to the young people; inspire the young persons career aspirations; help the young people to build a resume, apply for jobs and prepare for interviews; and make social connections by offering support and friendship in a fun and non-judgemental manner.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for people from a wide range of different cultural, professional and trade backgrounds with varied work experience in Australia, good understandings about job seeking requirements and in interest in supporting young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds.

Volunteers will be asked to make a commitment to volunteering for an initial 12 month period and will be required to provide support to young people in a culturally sensitive, welcoming, positive and non-judgemental manner.

People from an African or Pasifika background are strongly encouraged to apply.
