Cr Porter spoke, with a sense of pride, about the presence of over 100 families with an Iraqi background in Hume and was excited to be at the launch of the program that seeks to work with newly arrived Syrian and Iraqi families and support them to build connections within their local communities.

Welcome Football will be working closely with Football Federation Victoria, Hume City Council, local schools and community football clubs, including Upfield FC and Craigieburn City FC, as well as a range of other community organisations and service providers.

“Through a range of in-school, after-school and holiday programs, CMY is quickly connecting with hundreds of newly arrived young people,” said CMY CEO Carmel Guerra.

“It doesn’t take long to get a sense of the passion that’s felt for football among many of these young people and it’s another great example of football being a universal language.”

CMY’s Community Champion, Jimma Aziz, was also at the launch at the Broadmeadows campus of Collingwood English Language School, who have been instrumental in helping so many newly-arrived young people into the local education system.

Our Community Champions are newly arrived young people from Syria, Iraq and Somalia who are volunteering in the program to assist with program delivery, gain FFV qualifications and act as links between the program and their local communities.

The program has progressed well so far with 5 sessions delivered at primary schools across the City of Hume; weekly Monday evening football sessions at Hume City FC in Meadow Heights and 5 local young people, being developed as Community Champions, undertaking a Leadership and FFV Coaching course.
