What is MY Mentoring?
My Mentoring is a pilot program seeking to improve educational outcomes for disadvantaged migrant and refugee background young people through culturally targeted mentoring. During the pilot period, MY Mentoring is delivering programs for African and Pasifika background young people in selected schools and community-based learning support programs in the western suburbs of Melbourne. The pilot will also develop new resources about mentoring young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds.
MY Mentoring is delivered in partnership with Charis Mentoring and supported by the Victorian Government’s Mentoring for Kids in Need Commitment.
Volunteer with MY Mentoring
MY Mentoring is seeking volunteer mentors from all walks of life to support young people engaged in the program.
My Mentoring Volunteer Mentors attend weekly sessions with a group of young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds. Sessions, facilitated by a CMY staff member, are approximately 2 hours in duration and are either held during or immediately following school hours, for 14-16 weeks.
CMY provides ongoing training and support to mentors involved in the My Mentoring Program.
What do volunteer mentors do?
Volunteer Mentors actively participate in group and one-one-one sessions and share their work, study and life experiences in Australia; act as role models to young people; inspire the young person’s education and career aspirations; and make social connections by offering support and friendship in a fun and non-judgemental manner.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for people from a wide range of cultural, educational, professional and trade backgrounds and an interest in supporting young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds.
Volunteers will be asked to make a commitment to volunteering for a full semester (16-18 weeks) at mentoring programs in Kings Park or St Albans. Volunteers will be required to provide support to young people in a culturally sensitive, welcoming, positive and non-judgemental manner.
People from African or Pasifika backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
