| Who is YRIPP? The Youth Referral and Independent Person Program (YRIPP) is a State Government funded initiative of the Centre for Multicultural Youth and the Youth Affairs Council of Victoria, delivered in partnership with Community Legal Centres, UnitingCare and Victoria Police. What YRIPP does? YRIPP delivers a high quality system of adult volunteers called “Independent Persons” who attend police interviews with young people in police custody. YRIPP also aims to divert young people, including refugee and newly arrived young people, from further offending through early intervention at the point of police contact. YRIPP’s activities include: •Providing police with timely access to trained Independent Persons 24 hours a day, seven days a week. •Providing up to date training and ongoing support to volunteer Independent Persons. •Offering young people information about and referral to relevant local support services that may be able to help them. •Creating and distributing resources to police and parents about the juvenile justice system and support services. •Facilitating access to 24-hour telephone legal advice for young people in police custody. YRIPP operates in 129 police stations in Victoria and helps over 3000 young people each year. We currently have over 400 active volunteers.  . |
