ABOUT YRIPP
About YRIPP - YRIPP
| The Youth Referral and Independent Person Program (YRIPP) trains and supports people working as Independent Persons across Victoria. YRIPP provides up to date training, a state wide IP roster, resources for police and parents and access to a 24hr legal advice line for young people in custody. YRIPP is a unique partnership between community agencies and the Victoria Police. It is funded by the State Government and is a partnership of the Centre for Multicultural Youth, the Youth Affairs Council of Victoria, UnitingCare and other agencies. |
What is an Independent Person? |
| The law requires that an adult be present during formal police questioning of a young person under 18 years of age. When a parent or guardian is unavailable, an adult ‘Independent Person’ is required to be in attendance. (Section 464E Crimes Act 1958) |
A coordinated system of support |
| The establishment of a coordinated Independent Person system of support provided to young people in police custody offers a significant opportunity to address the over-representation of young people in the justice system, including those from migrant and refugee communities. |
