What is the CMY Statewide Multicultural Youth Issues Network?

CMY's Statewide Multicultural Youth Issues Network (SMYIN) provides a regular forum for people working with young people of diverse backgrounds to meet and share knowledge and experience. The Statewide meetings (three per year on different topics) help to promote partnerships and build collaborative work. Relevant issues and concerns are canvassed and documented, as a record and to contribute to an evidence-base for action.

If you would like to be notified of upcoming SMYIN meetings, email your contact details to
info@cmy.net.au or call (03) 9340 3700.

Update on the next Statewide Network meeting

Changing trends: who are the young refugees settling in Victoria today?

The last Statewide meeting for 2011 is a forum looking at the changing face of settlement for young refugees in Victoria.

Migration and settlement patterns of young people are changing. Until recently, most young people came to Australia with family members and after spending time in refugee camps. Today, young people may be unaccompanied minors and may have arrived by boat and spent time in immigration detention. Young people are also settling in local government areas that have not traditionally seen such settlement.

What does this mean for services? This forum will look at the following issues:

  • Diversity of migration and settlement patterns
  • Unaccompanied minors and their particular needs
  • Community detention
  • Responses from services, and support needed

When: Thursday 24 November, 10am - 1pm
Where: Multicultural Hub (506 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne - opposite the Queen Victoria Market)
Cost: free

Make it Just: Youth Justice and Young People from Refugee and Migrant Backgrounds - Tuesday 8 March 2011

CMY and the Victorian Cooperative on Children’s Services for Ethnic Groups (VICSEG) brought together workers from the Youth Justice sector and the settlement and multicultural sectors, to discuss the specific circumstances of young people of migrant and refugee backgrounds who come into contact with the justice system. Over 100 people from a range of services participated in the forum, many of whom had never previously been involved in a CMY or VIGSEG event. Presenters guided participants through the experiences of young from refugee and migrant backgrounds in the system. Topics Included:

  • An overview of the Youth Justice System
  • Working with Young People at Risk
  • Young People during Police Interviews
  • Experiences of Young People in Custody
  • Working with Young People and their Families after exiting Youth Justice

Following these presentations, participants heard about new programs run by Brosnan Youth Services, Victoria Police and the Springvale Monash Legal Centre. Finally, a panel of workers representing the Pacific Islander, Karen and African communities provided examples of how their communities dealt with young people who get ‘into trouble’ with the police.
