What is the Multicultural Sport and Recreation Project?

A key finding of the CMY reports, Sport: Creating a Level Playing Field (1998) and Sport: Sustaining a Level Playing Field (2002), was the lack of involvement of CLD young people in structured sport.

CMY’s Multicultural Sport and Recreation Project has attempted to address this issue by developing and documenting good practice models, connecting young people and their organisations with sporting bodies and competitions, as well as providing direction and links between relevant sporting and community groups.

Funded by VicHealth and Sport and Recreation Victoria, the aims of the Project are to:

  • advocate for strategic development and policy change at an organisational level to create amore inclusive and responsive sport and recreational sector;
  • support and assist State Sporting Associations in becoming inclusive of CLD young people by helping them to develop policies, programs and resources that facilitate CLD inclusion;
  • support and assist local government in becoming inclusive of CLD young people by helping them to develop policies, programs and resources that facilitate CLD inclusion;
  • support and assist leisure centres in becoming inclusive of CLD young people by helping them to develop policies, programs and resources that facilitate CLD inclusion; and
  • assist CLD communities to understand and access sport and recreation options in their local area.

These aims are achieved through a range of strategies including:

1. Research and community consultation;
2. Development and documentation of sustainable sporting programs;
3. Development of links between stakeholders;
4. Resource development, support and training; and
5. Advocating for the sporting needs of CLD groups.
