What is Snapshots from Oz?
Young people who have settled in Australia, arriving on refugee visas, are expertly positioned to communicate what its like to immigrate to Australia.
CMY devised a project where young people in Australia can communicate the experience of immigration with emigrating young refugees via a series of short videos.

Program Details
These five short videos were produced in 2011 by eight young people (Content Producers) in collaboration with a filmmaker Amie Batalibasi and the CMY’s Arts and Culture team.
The videos are being utilised as training materials by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship’s Australian Cultural Orientation (AUSCO) program.
The overall aim of this project was to improve settlement outcomes for young people intending to settle in Australia by providing highly engaging information and knowledge using appropriate Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

The films
| Five themes arose out of the consultations with the Content Producers: perceptions of Australia; community culture and housing; learning new technologies; school and language; and pathways to work and study. These themes were matched with appropriate film genres - animation, photo slideshow, physical comedy skit, drama and documentary - in order to develop the script ideas.
It is hoped that each piece will stand alone as an entertaining film but also work side by side with the others as a valuable body of work covering a variety of themes, stories and experiences to do with settlement in Australia.

- Before I Came to Australia - A group of young people from refugee backgrounds use drawings and memories to think back and explore the perceptions they had of Australia before they arrived. The film reveals comical tales and wild dreams set against the realities of the new country in which they have settled.
- In My Shoes - In an exploration of everyday life, a group of young people living in Melbourne take us into their world through photos of their community, culture, family and everyday world, to find out what life is like in their shoes.
- A Whole New World - Coming to a new country can be exciting and rewarding but at first it can often be frustrating and confusing learning to operate in a different environment, learning new technologies and navigating the world in a different way. Based on the experiences of several young people, this film re-enacts some of those first moments of frustration in a light-hearted comical slapstick way.
- First Day - A young Burmese girl embarks on her first day at a new school in a new country. Shy and not confident in her English skills, she is dreading this day and what may happen. But as her mother keeps reminding her, if you stop learning you stop growing.
- Pathways - This documentary explores the stories of three different people from refugee backgrounds at different points in their working lives, to discover what work kind of work and study opportunities are available in Australia and how these people got to where they are.
