Pathways and Transitions: Post-compulsory Education, Work and Refugee Young People
CMY and Victorian Settlement Planning Committee - (2008)

Australian agencies have developed a number of ways to help refugee and newly arrived young people of post-compulsory school age whose levels of education and types of experience do not match what Australian education and training frameworks associate with specific ages. This document provides case studies of initiatives and 'good practice principles'.

Multicultural Youth in Australia: Settlement and Transition

This paper, produced for the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth (ARACY), addresses the particular issues facing multicultural youth highlighting differences in experiences and needs among the groups of ‘multicultural youth’ - migrant, refugee and second generation young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Working with Multicultural Youth: Programs, Strategies and Future Directions
CMYI (Steve Francis and Sarah Cornfoot) - (2007)

This paper, produced for the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth (ARACY), identifies successful strategies and programs operating across Australia, as well as gaps in programs and their distribution; and suggests strategies and future directions for programs with multicultural young people. This paper includes valuable tables of programs in each state and territory, which while not comprehensive provide an interesting overview of available programs.

Playing for the future: The role of sport and recreation in supporting refugee young people to ‘settle well’ in Australia

'Playing for the future' was developed out of a forum held in April 2007 and a series of subsequent consultations with workers, community members and young people. The paper explores the role of sport and recreation in supporting refugee and migrant young people to settle in Australia.

‘A Christian, a Muslim and a Jew walk into a room…’: Young people and the role of inter-faith dialogue
CMYI (Louise Olliff) - (2007)

CMYI's first Statewide Multicultural Youth Issues Network (SMYIN) Meeting of 2007 explored the theme of young people and the role of inter-faith dialogue in promoting social harmony. This policy discussion paper looks at the context for the increasing number of inter-faith initiatives, how this impacts on young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds and their sense of identity, and provides some discussion around future considerations for initiatives aimed at promoting respect and understanding within our diverse community.

Settling In: How do refugee young people fair within Australia's settlement system?

Settling In: Exploring Good Settlement for Refugee Young People in Australia

In 2005-06, CMYI explored the question of ‘What is good youth settlement?’ through a policy forum and series of consultations with workers and young people. The resulting paper, "Settling In: Exploring Good Settlement for Refugee Young People in Australia", explores definitions of ‘good settlement’, investigates our current settlement service system and makes a series of recommendations.

This paper explores the significance of age as a factor in the successful settlement of refugee young people who arrive in Australia. CMYI has found that many young people who arrive in late adolescence (15-24 years) are faced with an array of additional pressures, demands and stresses. Paper includes policy recommendations relating to services for older adolescents.

Report into Good Practice Sports Inclusion Models for young people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities
CMYI & Gary Henshall & Associates - (2005)

The purpose of this report was to develop good practice models in relation to involving young people from CLD backgrounds in structured sport. Anecdotal evidence obtained from State Sporting Associations, Local Government Authorities, Peak Bodies and sports clubs as part of this project suggest that whilst it appears that a reasonable number of young people from CLD backgrounds are participating in sport, much of this participation is occurring outside the club environment.

Report providing an overview summary of six studies undertaken on ‘ethnic youth gangs’ in the Melbourne metropolitan area over the period 1996-1998. This report presents the overall findings of the study, and involves comparisons between the different groups as well as highlighting common features. It discusses further general issues relating to perceptions of, and responses to, ‘youth gangs’ in the context of a culturally diverse society.

Updating Victoria's Youth Policy: Report from Youth Consultation with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Young People

On 23 February 2006, the Victorian Office for Youth and the Centre for Multicultural Youth Issues (CMYI) co-hosted a consultation forum with young people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) backgrounds. The forum attracted over 50 young people from a wide variety of backgrounds. This paper reports on the main themes emerging from the consultation around Victoria's youth policy.

CMYI Policy Statement on Mandatory Detention

CMYI believes that the indefinite, mandatory detention of those seeking asylum in Australia, particularly children and young people, represents an unjust and inhumane policy response to the global population flows that have arisen as a result of the persecution suffered by communities and individuals on the basis of their race, religion, political opinion, and social group membership.
