Multicultural Sports Network Update
The Multicultural Sports Network Meeting held on Wednesday 12 March explored the findings by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity’s report, What’s the Score? A survey of cultural diversity and racism in Australian sport. Presenting the findings was Paul Oliver, Director of Public Affairs for HREOC.
Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs and Minister Assisting the Premier on Multicultural Affairs, The Hon. James Merlino was in attendance to launch Playing for the future: The role of sport and recreation in supporting refugee young people to 'settle well' in Australia. Louise Olliff, CMYI’s Sector Development Co-ordinator and author of the report, was on hand to discuss the findings.
Hon. Minister Merlino also announced that CMYI would receive a funding grant of $80,000 over the next two years for the training of young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds in the area of coaching and officiating. The ongoing support of Minister Merlino is much appreciated by CMYI and we look forward to developing more opportunities for diverse young people to be involved in sport and recreation for 2008 and beyond.
To find out more about What’s the Score?, or to obtain a free copy of the report on CD-ROM, visit the HREOC website.
A copy of Playing for the future is also available for download in the CMYI website’s Publications section.
The next Sports Network Meeting will be held in Melbounre during June, and will look at the need for a strong working relationship between schools and the community if the sporting and recreation sector is to be truly inclusive and supportive of diverse young people. So, just what is the team up to at the moment?
Claudia Abakah - cabakah@cmyi.net.au
- Following a ‘come and try’ day with Netball Victoria early this year, and after receiving tickets from the Hon. Minister Merlino’s office to attend a netball match, a group of young women and men have expressed interest in learning more about netball and taking part in a competition. As a result, Claudia is currently facilitating a group of 12 young women aged 14 -19 to take part in a weekly netball competition. The girls had their first training session and official match during April, and will train every Tuesday night and play on Monday nights at various times. The Dandenong Netball Association and Netball Victoria have been most supportive and open to the girls being part of their association and weekly competitions, and have provided court space for training plus other resources. They are also currently working on getting a netball development officer to develop the skills of the girls. Netball Victoria is looking into purchasing uniforms for the team, providing assistance to transport the girls to and from the venue each week, and ongoing support to encourage other migrant young women to play netball. Please feel free to drop in if you’re in the area to support and cheer on the girls or refer any clients interested. There will also be an opportunity to create a mixed team in the future.
- Claudia is currently also researching sport and recreational programs and facilities in the City of Casey, as she will be placed there two days a week to run a similar project to that of the Springers project in the City of Greater Dandenong.
- Friday night Futsal is still running with an average of 35 young men attending. It is hoped that the City of Greater Dandenong and Springers will continue to run the program with the assistance of a member of the Sudanese community.
Nyadol Nyuon - nnyuon@cmyi.net.au
- Nyadol is continuing her work with the Go For Your Life project in Ballarat, which links newly arrived and refugee young people to sport and recreation opportunities in Ballarat.
- Nyadol was recently involved in the development of the Sudanese Festival, held at the Immigration Museum on Saturday 12 April. Almost 1,800 people soaked up the unique atmosphere and hopped and bopped to the sound of drumming. The festival offered visitors the chance to experience and enjoy music and dance performances, family activities and food, whilst gaining a new perspective on the Sudanese community in Melbourne and Victoria. Congratulations to Nyadol and all others involved in organising the event!
- Nyadol has been invited to present at an Immigration Museum forum, entitled ‘Is multiculturalism good for women?’. This forum event will bring together women from the migrant activist movement of the 1970s and 1980s with today’s young women, to discuss the central place of women in our multicultural community. Visit the Immigration Museum website for more details.
