Multicultural Sport and Recreation Team update

From the Co-ordinator
Shane Cooke is in the midst of mapping out the vast amount of partnership work, support and consultation that the Sport and Recreation team offer to sporting and recreation providers across Victoria. Watch this space…..

The CMY Sport and Recreation team had a very productive and energetic planning day at the end of January and some very exciting proposed projects were discussed by the team, more info to follow soon.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank ALL our partners from SSAs, RSAs, and recreation providers to local clubs to Local councils for their continued support of the great work the Sport and recreation team undertake across Victoria. Partnerships are the cornerstone of our community focused development work and through partnerships sustainable and long term outcomes are been consistently achieved.

Flemington Estate Women’s Participation in Sport and Recreation Project
Led by Doutta Galla Community Health Service and funded by Department of Planning and Community Development Sport & Recreation, the project is partnered by community organisations, local government, Victoria Police and CMY to increase the participation of local women in sport & recreation opportunities. The project recently facilitated a young women’s camp, surfing lessons, dance program and much more.

Training
CMY’s Sport and Recreation team have extensive experience in offering culturally-aware training packages that look at barriers for participation and strategies to engage young people from newly arrived and refugee backgrounds in sport and recreation opportunities.

New project announced
The CMY Sport and Recreation team has recently received a grant form Sport and Recreation Victoria to deliver the LEAP (Leadership, Employment, Active Participation) project. LEAP was formed as the CMY Sport and Recreation team had identified and advocated to SRV that female participation in sport and recreation was low.

CMY's Claudia Abakah will deliver this project in North-Western Melbourne including Kensington, Ascot Vale and North Melbourne, in partnership with the YMCA. The project aims to increase participation of newly arrived migrant and refugee women within the YMCA. This participation will cover gym and swimming activities, and will also offer employment and work experience opportunities within YMCA.

CMY All for One Goal Day
On the 26th of February a number of sports clubs and organisations joined with CMY at Wallace Oval to provide a day of sports and activities. The participants included students from St Patrick’s Primary School - Gordon, St Michaels’ Primary School - Springbank and School of Mining Ballarats’ English as a Second Language (ESL) Class. The day was a great success with over 100 individuals in attendance and both activity providers and the participants had a great time.

Current activities
Badminton classes on Wednesdays that starts on the 25th of February and Friday Classes that starts on the 27th of February for 5 weeks. It will be held on Wednesdays for Secondary and primary students and Fridays for adults. This is for the newly arrived migrants in the Ballarat area. Participants that finish the 5 week classes will be offer scholarship by the Badminton Association. At the moment there are more than 10 participants.

The program in Ballarat is really going well. Different groups are helping each other to achieve one goal which is letting the newly arrived migrants integrate with the community and having fun learning new games and meeting people in the community.

Multicultural Coaching and Officiating Project
This project is funded by Sport and Recreation Victoria and aims to create pathways for newly arrived migrants and refugees to become coaches and sports officials. The Project links participants in the Western suburbs to coaching and officiating courses run by the state sport associations, and is helping to develop relationships between community members, settlement and support services, state sport associations and local sport associations.

Much of the project so far has involved educating the community about opportunities that exist to become coaches, referees and umpires in organised sport, and also recruiting participants and local sport associations. Over the next few months participants will be taking part in coaching or officiating courses in soccer, basketball, swimming, AFL and cricket.

I would like to thank the following local sport associations for supporting the Project: Melton Basketball Association, Sunshine Heights Cricket Club, Melton Soccer Club, Satellite City Soccer Club, Sunshine Heights Junior Soccer Club, Sunshine Georgies Junior Soccer Club, Longhorns Basketball Club and Sunshine United Buffalos soccer club.

Some highlights so far:

  • In January two participants completed an AustSwim course. They are currently being supported by Swimming Victoria to be mentored by AustSwim coaches before sitting the exam
  • Soccer Junior Coaching License – Football Federation Victoria and City of Brimbank are supporting a soccer coaching course run exclusively for the Project. The Course will be run in St Albans this weekend, with 15 participants registered 14th – 15th March
  • Melton Basketball Coaching Project – Melton Basketball Association and Basketball Victoria are helping to organise a Level 0 and a Level 1 coaching course in Melton to be open to anyone, including participants of the Project
