Multicultural Sport and Recreation Team update

The Sport and Recreation team: just what ARE they doing with themselves??

Nick Mac Hale - nmachale@cmy.net.au
Hume Youth Action Group
  • This group brings together young people from different backgrounds and experiences with the common goal of carrying out youth-led initiatives to improve social and recreational outcomes and opportunities for young people in Hume. The group ensures young people have a voice on current issues affecting them in the area. The group will also provide an opportunity for participants to have direct input into the planning and implementation of programs for young people.

Hume Futsal
  • Futsal runs at Progress Hall, Coolaroo every Tuesday during school term. Currently the program caters for 12 – 15 and 16 – 21 year-olds, this is a mixed program. Cost is $2 a week per player. The program employs a local young person to coordinate the football every week. There are also 3 oung people volunteering every week who also sit on the program committee. A girls-only program will begin on Wednesday 10 June @ 5pm.

Hume Back Yard Rugby
  • The Victorian Rugby Union and Victoria Police 'Back Yard Rugby' program is now running in Hume. The program is a non-contact game and runs every Friday from 4.30pm to 6pm. It is free of charge and open to young people of all abilities.

Broadmeadows English Language Centre Soccer Camp
  • Three former language centre students recently achieved their FFV Junior Coaching License through the Brunswick Zebras Football Club. The coaches will be running a six-week soccer camp for all 82 students at the language centre.

Multicultural Coaching and Officiating Project
The Multicultural Coaching and Officiating Project has been very successful in the past month. The project has linked over 100 participants to accredited coaching or officiating courses in soccer, basketball, AFL and swimming. Over 90 of these participants have already successfully attained their coaching or officiating accreditation.

Much of the project so far has involved educating the community about opportunities that exist to become coaches, referees and umpires in organised sport, and also recruiting participants and local sport associations. Over the next few months participants will be taking part in coaching or officiating courses in soccer, basketball, swimming, AFL and cricket.

I would like to thank the following local sport associations for supporting the Project: Melton Basketball Association, Sunshine Heights Cricket Club, Melton Soccer Club, Satellite City Soccer Club, Sunshine Heights Junior Soccer Club, Sunshine Georgies Junior Soccer Club, Longhorns Basketball Club and Sunshine United Buffalos soccer club.

Some highlights so far:

  • Five participants of the program have completed the FFV Level 5 Refereeing Course, and are about to complete the Level 4 Course this Saturday.
  • Seven young people have successfully completed the Basketball Victoria Level 0 Refereeing Course and begin their practical assessment this week.
  • An impressive 70 ESL students from 3 high schools in the West have successfully attained an AFL Umpiring accreditation through an ongoing program with AFL Victoria.
  • Participants are continuing to work through a number of other courses as well. These courses include a Basketball Victoria Level 1 Coaching Course, (more) FFV Level 4 and 5 Refereeing courses and 2 participants are working their way through the practical requirements to complete their Aust Swim accreditation.

All the participants of the Project should be very proud of their achievements so far!! The project is holding a Graduation and Community Celebration on Wednesday 3 June at Errington Community Centre in St Albans, to celebrate the successes of the participants. It is also a chance to thank the Project Partners and the local clubs, associations and leisure centres that have supported the Project. Participants, and their family and friends, will be attending from throughout the City of Brimbank, as well as Werribee, Melton and Laverton.
