Introduction

As a member of the Refugee Education Partnership Project (REPP), Out of School Hours Learning Support Program (OSHLSPs) came to the attention of CMY as they can provide much needed support to refugee, migrant, and disadvantaged young people. CMY helps to support OSHLSPs in a number of ways. CMY helps with training, consultation, support and resourcing of OSHLSPs and is currently managing a pilot of regional coordination of OSHLSPs in the western region of Melbourne, funded by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. The DEECD has dedicated funding to extending similar support to the rest of Melbourne starting in 2009.

Learning Beyond the Bell Grants Program

CMY has been engaged by DEECD to support and coordinate OSHLSPs including providing a grants program, volunteer training, and program management support.

In March 2008, DEECD funded CMY to manage a pilot project in 2008/09 involving five OSHLSPs in the Western Metropolitan Region. This pilot is now underway. In May 2008, the State Government announced funding to expand the support provided in the pilot to other regions through CMY, for coordination, support and training and foster stronger links between schools and community based organisations.

As a result, CMY will be offering two rounds of grants for OSHLSPs - a one-off grant of $15,000 for 2009, and a grant of $15,000 per year for three years (from 2010 to 2012).
Grant applications for 2009 are closed although applications for the next grant round will open in late 2009.

Support for organisations developing and managing OSHLSPs

Are you running or thinking of starting a homework or learning support program? CMY can help to support you in the development and maintenance of your program.

REPP developed a co-ordinators’ manual based on best practices for OSHLSPs, training for tutors and training resources, and case studies of five OSHLSP models. CMY supports a Homework Help Network for co-ordinators and agencies, and provides consultation for the development and maintenance of OSHLSPs.

Homework Help Network

The Homework Help Network holds bi-monthly meeting of coordinators and agencies involved with OSHLSPs. The meetings involve presentations from a range of learning support models, a focus on specific topics, information and resource sharing and professional development.

The network includes an online community that provides access to forums, information and resources, and an opportunity to glean ideas and knowledge from other Homework Club Coordinators.

Aims of the network are:

  • Highlighting the benefits of Homework Help;
  • Promoting good practice in Homework Help;
  • Contributing to the effective sharing and promotion of resources that are being developed within the community on Homework Help;
  • Supporting discussion of issues common to all Homework Help providers; and
  • Showcasing effective models of Homework Help.

To become a member of the network, contact Libby Henstock (contact details are below).
