Tutoring Resources



The following Learning Beyond the Bell resources are for homework club tutors. They provide ideas and advice to assist you in providing quality educational support to the students you work with.

LBB Tutor Training Resources - download chapters from the Learning Beyond the Bell Tutor Training manual. The manual contains lots of information and ideas about tutoring, with particular focus on working with ESL students.

Activities for newly arrived students - games and activities to use with students who are newly arrived to Australia.

Tutor Tips - improving students' literacy skills - ideas for tutors working with students who need extra support with literacy.

Helping students get the most out of homework club - tutors may like to go though these ideas with students to ensure they get the most out of their time at homework club.

Modifying homework for refugee / ESL students.- although designed for school teachers, some ideas may be useful for homework clubs tutors.

LBB Tutor Training Resources - download chapters from the Learning Beyond the Bell Tutor Training manual. The manual contains lots of information and ideas about tutoring, with particular focus on working with ESL students.

Education Place – GRAPHIC ORGANISERS. Graphic organisers are tools used to plan tasks and assignments – students can visually organise information, ideas and research using these tools. The Education Place website has downloadable graphic organisers you may be able to print and use with students in your program.

Discovery Education - PUZZLEMAKER. Discovery Education Puzzlemaker! Puzzlemaker is a puzzle generation tool that allows you to create your own word searches, crosswords, math puzzles, and more.

Khan Academy. Features hundreds of short videos on maths and science topics from primary level to tertiary, explained in a very friendly and straightforward way.

Super Teacher Worksheets. Particularly useful for those working with primary students who may not bring homework, this site contains thousands of free downloadable worksheets to use with students you see needing help in particular areas.

FUSE ESL Resources Page. From the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, this page has lots of links to great pages for people teaching ESL students.

Past VCE exam papers and sample assessment reports. Are you working with VCE students? Past exam papers can be an excellent resource for revising for exams and making students familiar with the content and style of exams.

ESL Resources and Ideas from the Department of Education. This site offers some great activities to those working with young people from ESL backgrounds, on the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) website.

National Center for Quality Afterschool. This American site provides a range of support materials to engage students in fun activities at homework clubs that create a desire to learn and build on what students are learning during the school day. The site provides tool kits, lesson plans and videos of teaching practices across various learning domains.

ESL Mania. Ideas, activities and worksheets for supporting ESL students. This site contains an abundance of free printable worksheets for supporting students who arrive at homework clubs without homework.

One-Stop English - Weekly Topical News Lessons. This UK site provides weekly lesson plans and worksheets based on newspaper articles from the Guardian newspaper.

100 Best Guides and Resources for ESL Teachers. This US site contains links to a wide range of resources for those involved in teaching English as a Second Language.

DIAC Community Profiles. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship develops community profile documents to allow people to better understand the backgrounds and needs of people from refugee backgrounds. There are a number of community profiles already there including Bhutanese, Burmese, Ethiopian and Sudanese.
