Case Study - Tito - CMY - Centre for Multicultural Youth

Tito's story

Tito, 16, came to Australia in 2001. Fleeing the conflict in Sudan via Egypt with his family of eight, Tito says they ‘were looking for a safe and peaceful country with improved education and a better life.’

On education… Tito, now in year 9, thinks school could be better and is looking for more stimulation and thinks ‘science would be good.’

On living in Australia…‘Things have changed lately, the stuff that’s been happening – a lot of it is unfair. I think there are a number of things about this whole situation that are unfair, including the way the police deal with us.’ Tito is keen to keep an eye on what’s going on in the world around him and watches the news to keep updated.

Tito likes playing basketball and shows his dedication and passion to the sport by traveling up to 1½ hours three times a week each way to train and compete. Unfortunately, because Tito lives so far away from his team and due to the lack of access to private transport and insufficient operating times for public transport he has to miss out on some games.

In some instances Tito has walked for 45 minutes to 1 hour late at night from the station to get home after playing basketball. Tito doesn’t mind how far he has to travel to get to play basketball as long as he gets to play and hang out with his friends.

‘I love basketball and will keep playing,’ say Tito, who aspires to play for and hopes to succeed in representing Australia in the future but also make it to the NBA. Tito wants to pursue a career in sport as a professional ball player first but at some stage sports management or official of the sport.
