What is BRIC?
|
Building Relationships and Initiating Change (BRIC) is a new group mentoring program funded by the Victorian Office for Youth for three years (2009-11). It aims to support groups of young people from newly arrived and culturally and linguistically diverse communities seeking to establish their own youth groups and/or youth-led initiatives. It will provide them with mentoring for one year to support their skill and knowledge development to achieve identified goals for their youth group and/or youth-led initiative.

Program Details
|
The program is being delivered in two stages, with the first currently underway in the western region of Melbourne (Cities of Maribyrnong, Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Brimbank).
The second phase of BRIC will be delivered from October 2010 – October 2011 in the south eastern region (Cities of Dandenong and Casey). 4-6 youth groups will be matched with 1-3 mentors, who will support the group to achieve its youth-led goals and initiatives. Some projects explored by groups previously have included organising community entertainment nights, maintaining soccer groups, and starting a band. Some youth groups may not wish to undertake a project, but want to become more established as a group and get together on a regular basis.
Each group will also be offered CMY’s Short Burst Training, which covers a range of topics including team building, project management, leadership, fundraising and media.

Volunteer Mentors

Volunteer BRIC Mentors will each bring their own unique skill set to the program to support the group they are matched with. Mentors involved in the BRIC program may include students, professionals or volunteers who have a business background, experience in arts or sports projects, event management skills, or any other skills that may prove useful for the development of strong youth groups. Mentors will meet approximately once a fortnight for 2 hours with their youth group, and through the development of supportive relationships, they will share their skills, knowledge and experiences with young people to further develop the capacity of their youth-groups and/or youth-led initiatives.
