CMYI (Louise Olliff) - (2007)

CMYI's first Statewide Multicultural Youth Issues Network (SMYIN) Meeting of 2007 explored the theme of young people and the role of inter-faith dialogue in promoting social harmony. This policy discussion paper looks at the context for the increasing number of inter-faith initiatives, how this impacts on young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds and their sense of identity, and provides some discussion around future considerations for initiatives aimed at promoting respect and understanding within our diverse community.

Considering consulting? A guide to meaningful consultation with young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds
CMY (2007, updated 2010)

Consultation is a tool regularly used by government and non-government agencies to gain an insight into the views and opinions of the whole or specific segments of the community. Many of those who wish to consult with young people acknowledge that they lack the knowledge and confidence to engage appropriately with young people from diverse backgrounds. CMYI has developed this publication to be a simple tool to guide the process.

Evaluation of the Brimbank Young Men’s Project

Examines the Brimbank Young Men’s Project, a two year pilot initiative of CMY, which aims to help young men of African backgrounds who are: disengaged (or at high risk of being disengaged) from education, training and employment; have had contact with the police; and are experiencing other difficulties with settlement.

Late Arrivals: The needs of refugee young people who resettle in later adolescence

This paper explores the significance of age as a factor in the successful settlement of refugee young people who arrive in Australia. CMYI has found that many young people who arrive in late adolescence (15-24 years) are faced with an array of additional pressures, demands and stresses. Paper includes policy recommendations relating to services for older adolescents.

Opening the School Gate: Engaging CLD Parents in Schools

Despite the strong desire to build connections between families and schools, schools often find it difficult to engage CLD families. Opening the School Gate provides some practical suggestions and tools to overcome barriers to involvement. Sections include: Planning for greater CLD engagement in your school; Planning a CLD parents' meeting; Running an effective meeting with CLD parents; Supporting CLD families in your school. Report into Good Practice Sports Inclusion Models for young people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities

The purpose of this report was to develop good practice models in relation to involving young people from CLD backgrounds in structured sport. Anecdotal evidence obtained from State Sporting Associations, Local Government Authorities, Peak Bodies and sports clubs as part of this project suggest that whilst it appears that a reasonable number of young people from CLD backgrounds are participating in sport, much of this participation is occurring outside the club environment.

Settling In: Exploring Good Settlement for Refugee Young People in Australia

In 2005-06, CMY explored the question of ‘What is good youth settlement?’ through a policy forum and series of consultations with workers and young people. The resulting paper, "Settling In: Exploring Good Settlement for Refugee Young People in Australia", explores definitions of ‘good settlement’, investigates our current settlement service system and makes a series of recommendations.

They meet a range of barriers that complicates their ability to join structured sport. Sports Tip Sheet: Winning Tactics - Good practice principles in the field

During Refugee Week 2010, CMY held the Winning Tactics: Successful projects involving young refugees and migrants in sport forum. The aim of the forum was to showcase programs that had been successful in building relationships with local newly-arrived and refugee communities, and to share what they had learnt. The programs profiled in this Tip Sheet were presented at the forum, and demonstrate the mutual benefits of extending a hand to newly-arrived communities.

Working with newly-arrived young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness - Info Sheet
(2010)

An inability to access appropriate, safe and affordable housing is one of the most significant problems newly arrived young people encounter in Victoria; if they are not supported appropriately, then this places them at a high risk of homelessness and forms a substantive barrier to successful settlement. Service providers need to be aware of the increased risk factors and barriers, so that they can identify early young people in this cohort and respond more effectively to them.
